There is a first time for everything

Yesterday was the first time I've ever gone to the theater alone.
I watched Avatar and thought it was outstanding.  I love suspending disbelief and enjoying a good, comfortable story.
The 3D effects really made it easy to get pulled into this magical fantasy.
At one point I was brushing imaginary flakes away from my face.   I felt pretty silly when I realized what I had done.
I'd give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars on my non-existent movie rating scale.
I ate too much popcorn too.

Gratefulness

I feel really out of the loop today. In an effort to counter the potential melancholy I'm going to list what I'm grateful for this week.

Friday was payday.  In-coming cash flow is always nice.
My wonderful children, Starr and James,  who I may get to see in March.
I managed to crank the old green truck and I didn't have to get a new battery.
(Thank you AutoZone).
Cars and trucks just don't do well if they aren't driven.
The longer they sit the more they break down.
A nice visit with Jesse and Christy on Thursday.
Jeremy is on evenings this week so I didn't get to see him (shucks).

I always feel peaceful and loved when I am around them.
I can't leave out Einstein who always welcomes me home with a hardy 'Hello'.

I feel better already!
Have a wonderful Saturday.

Saturday Adventure

I’m looking forward to a change of pace day! And do I really need it.
The Birmingham Photography Group is having a brainstorming lunch meeting at O’Charley’s. It will be nice to get out of this town, go see other things, and hang out with photographers for a while. I may even work in a little photowalk since it is supposed to be a beautiful day. I need to get a shot for the noticings game and the last shot for my 365 project

I’m also stopping by Whole Foods in search of the elusive Sophie Giraffe. No doubt some cheese will be procured as well. Whole Foods has a wide selection of cheeses. One of my favorites is Point Reyes Blue. Delicious! Well, at least it is to me.

Of course, I’m probably influenced by the many good memories of Sunday breakfast at the Station House CafĂ© followed by lazy walks around town usually ending with a perusal of the new offerings at Point Reyes Books.

I hope each of you has a wonderful day!  :-)

What am I thankful for this week?

The snow wasn't as bad as everyone kept telling me it was going to be.
Today I got out and took some photos.  It was sunny and almost warm.
Homemade hummus
Being alone on V-day wasn't nearly as bad as it has been in the past.
All the laundry is done.

What are you grateful for this week?

Happy V-day

I usually post an anti-Valentine's Day blog, but not this year.
This is a year for positive thinking, exploration,  and changes.

Happy Valentine's day.

Midnight Shift

Posted on 5:08 AM by jr cline | 0 comments

Once upon a time in a rundown section of suburbia, a shabby convenience store and a sleazy late night bar faced each other across a poorly lit stretch of four lane highway. The few businesses on each side had long ago closed and fallen into disrepair.

One night, around 2 am, two police cars, lights flashing and sirens wailing, screeched to a stop outside the store. Their spot lights transformed the front of the store into a garish caricature of its self. The two fired up state troopers, guns drawn, charged into the store to find a long haired, bearded hippie at the cash register. The hippie quickly raised his hands over his head. One officer cautiously eased around the counter. The other nervously surveyed the rest of the store. The suspect was roughly frisked, cuffed, and shoved to the concrete floor by one officer while the other officer kept a gun trained on him.

After an extended period of unnecessary roughness and hostile questioning, the officers finally called the store owner who was justifiable angered by being awakened at that hour. He told the officers to let the hippie go. He was the new midnight shift clerk.

While removing the cuffs, the officers hastily apologized to the hippie. They explained that a passing motorist had called in a robbery in progress and they had responded to the call not knowing this was the first night the store had been open for the midnight to seven a.m. shift.

After giving the hippie a long lecture on how to keep from being robbed and killed in that neighborhood, they left. The hippie and the officers became great friends in the following months. They checked on him several times each night always leaving with him with their words of warning.

I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, I was that hippie.

A couple of weeks after I left for a better paying day job, just as the state troopers had feared, the midnight shift clerk was robbed and killed.

Shift happens
